Established in 2016 as a subsidiary of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Arcadian’s work spans ecological surveys, protected species assessments and long-term habitat monitoring, alongside biodiversity net gain (BNG), nitrate neutrality and wider nature-based solutions for development.
What sets Arcadian apart is its close connection to the Trust. Rather than operating as a traditional commercial consultancy, Arcadian is mission-based, sharing the Trust’s values and long-term ambition for nature recovery.
This connection means Arcadian can draw on more than 60 years of conservation experience, combining scientific knowledge with practical experience of habitat, wildlife and land management.
Deborah Whitfield, Senior Nature-Based Solutions Manager at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said: “Arcadian was created to help us reach more people and deliver more for nature. The expertise has always been within the Trust, and Arcadian gives us a way to combine our conservation experience with professional ecological services, and work alongside a wider range of partners, landowners and organisations.
“We are not here simply to make a profit. Our purpose is to support nature’s recovery. Every project contributes to that mission, whether through habitat creation, ecological advice or helping organisations create practical solutions that make a real difference for wildlife.”
Over the past 10 years, the consultancy has worked with over 200 landowners, businesses, local authorities and conservation organisations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to help protect wildlife including rare native species, restore habitats, and create more resilient landscapes.
Arcadian's work includes seagrass and coastal bird surveys, contributing to internationally important scientific datasets and habitat creation for threatened native species such as white-clawed crayfish, and practical improvements to ponds, grasslands and green spaces across the region.
Arcadian helps landowners and organisations navigate increasingly complex environmental requirements, including BNG, natural capital and emerging environmental markets. As interest in nature-based solutions continues to grow, Arcadian is supporting clients to identify opportunities that benefit both wildlife and people.
A recent project includes a major habitat restoration scheme in East Hampshire, where Arcadian is supporting large-scale habitat creation while assessing wider benefits for wildlife, including birds, bats and soil health. The work goes beyond minimum environmental requirements, helping demonstrate the broader environmental value that nature recovery can deliver.
Arcadian, which has grown from a team of four into a consultancy of 14 specialists, is also expanding its work into biodiversity net gain, helping landowners understand new opportunities and manage land for the long term.
Deborah adds: "People want to do the right thing for nature, but the landscape is becoming increasingly complex. Our role is to help people understand what is possible and how to make it work in practice.
"We know that creating healthier, more resilient landscapes for the future cannot be delivered alone. This is why Arcadian has built strong partnerships with local authorities, businesses, developers, landowners and other conservation organisations over the past decade, working collaboratively to deliver high-quality outcomes rooted in trust, expertise and shared ambition.”
Arcadian also continues to invest in new technology and ways of working, embracing digital mapping, remote wildlife monitoring using imagery drones and advanced data analysis to deliver efficient, evidence-led solutions.
The future looks strong, with the consultancy expanding its work in habitat restoration, habitat assessment and climate resilience, while exploring new opportunities such as traditional orchard restoration and other projects that support long-term environmental recovery.
Importantly, every project also supports wider conservation work. All profits generated by Arcadian are reinvested back into funding action on the ground for nature across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
In 2025, Arcadian was designated as a Responsible Body by Defra. The accreditation allows the consultancy to establish conservation covenants that secure long-term habitat enhancements for BNG projects and monitor restoration efforts to ensure agreed environmental outcomes are achieved for decades to come.
