A fond farewell to Bouldnor Forest Nature Reserve

A fond farewell to Bouldnor Forest Nature Reserve

From 20 July, the Trust will no longer manage Bouldnor Forest Nature Reserve. The reserve is owned by the Forestry Commission, which we have leased since 2011. As our lease comes to an end, the Forestry Commission has decided not to extend it and will be taking the reserve back into their care.

Jamie Marsh, Director of Land Management, said:
“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved at Bouldnor over the years. It’s a fascinating nature reserve with a rich prehistoric past, and its diverse habitats, including pine forest, heathland, cliffs and seagrass beds, support a wealth of wildlife.

We’ve worked hard over many years to restore the heathland habitat, managing the rapid spread of gorse to create better conditions for species such as nightjar, heath dog-violet and adders.

Bouldnor was also our office base for awhile on the Island, and it holds many happy memories, from Forest School sessions in the woodland and guided walks on the heathland in search of nightjars, to welcoming HRH Princess Anne in 2018 to meet our woodland apprentices. It has been an amazing site for us to care for.

While we are sad to step away, we remain committed to looking after our other 16 nature reserves on the Island.”
