New Forest Non-Native Plants Project Shortlisted for National Park Protector Award

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust conservation project has been shortlisted for a prestigious National Park Protector Award in recognition of its work protecting and restoring nature across the New Forest.

The New Forest Non-Native Plants Project has been selected for the shortlist in this year's National Park Protector Awards. Organised by Campaign for National Parks, the Awards celebrate the people, groups and projects making an outstanding contribution to National Parks in England and Wales.

Since launching in 2009, the project has worked with volunteers, landowners and land managers to tackle invasive non-native plant species that threaten the New Forest's internationally important habitats. The project focuses on controlling species including Himalayan balsam, giant hogweed, Japanese knotweed, American skunk cabbage and parrot's feather, helping to protect rivers, wetlands and native wildlife across the National Park.

The nomination was submitted by the New Forest Biodiversity Forum, recognising the project's collaborative approach and its contribution to nature recovery across the New Forest.

Holly Fitzgerald, New Forest Non‑Native Plants Officer from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said: "I’m delighted that the New Forest Non-Native Plants Project has been shortlisted for a National Park Protector Award. This recognition reflects the dedication of the many volunteers, landowners, partners and supporters who have contributed to the project over the years.

“Tackling invasive non-native species is a long-term challenge, but by working together we're helping to protect some of the New Forest's most important habitats for wildlife and future generations."

The shortlisting recognises the collective efforts of the many people and organisations involved in the project and highlights the importance of partnership working in protecting one of the UK's most treasured landscapes.

Winners of the National Park Protector Awards will be announced later this year.
