Chalk Stream Quest launches for families this May half term

New interactive family trails celebrating Hampshire’s chalk rivers

Families across Hampshire are invited to explore their local chalk streams this May half term with the help of Chalk Stream Quest, a series of new interactive walking trails designed especially for children.

Delivered by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust in partnership with Wessex Rivers Trust, the project is part of the Watercress & Winterbournes Landscape Partnership, bringing together conservation, storytelling and outdoor play to help local communities discover the remarkable wildlife living in their nearby rivers and streams.

Chalk Stream Quest features eight family-friendly walking routes on existing footpaths and green spaces across Hampshire. Each walk includes a trail of QR codes which, when scanned on a phone, unlock short, animated videos introducing children and adults to the species that depend on chalk streams.

From kingfishers and otters to brown trout, water voles and the rare southern damselfly, the videos bring these hidden river residents to life and help families understand why chalk streams are so special – and so important to protect. Designed with primary-age children in mind, the trails encourage learning through exploration and curiosity.

Unlike destination attractions, the trails are aimed at local people, many of whom may already know these routes but will now see them in a new way. Most walks follow well-used paths through towns, villages and nature reserves, making them easy to fit into everyday family life.

Kathryn Boler, Partnership Manager for the Watercress & Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme, said: “Chalk Stream Quest is all about helping local families reconnect with the rivers on their doorstep.

“Hampshire is one of the most important places in the world for chalk streams, yet many people don’t realise they’re walking alongside a globally rare habitat which supports an extraordinary array of wildlife.

“By combining simple walks with animation and storytelling, we’re encouraging children spend time outdoors, explore riverbanks, notice the wildlife around them and what’s living in the water, and start building a real sense of care for their local environment.”

Chalk Stream Quest locations are in: Alresford, Anton Lakes Nature Reserve, Laverstoke and Freefolk, Overton, Pillhill Brook, Rooksbury Mill Nature Reserve and Whitchurch.

The Watercress & Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme is a collaborative programme working to celebrate, restore and protect the headwaters of the Rivers Test and Itchen.

The scheme brings together local communities, conservation organisations and landowners, and is made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players.

Trials range from short, medium and longer lengths, offering a choice for different ages and abilities. Find more Watercress & Winterbournes information, including full details on trail locations and how to take part in the Chalk Stream Quest, online here
