Is an end to the badger cull in sight?

WildNet - Andrew Mason

A shift in government policy could signal a welcome reprieve for the iconic badger

For 12 years our Trust has joined with others across the country in opposing the ineffective and expensive badger cull, relentlessly pushing for change and campaigning for ‘medicine, not marksmen’ in the fight against Bovine Tuberculosis.

We are therefore excited to finally see a shift in Government strategy that should lead to the end of regular badger culling in England within five years:

‘the current intensive badger culling policy would begin to be phased out in the next few years, gradually replaced by government-supported badger vaccination and surveillance

Debbie Tann – CEO of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said:

The badger is one of our most beloved and remarkable native species and I urge the government to rapidly invest in a strategic and widespread badger and cattle vaccination scheme, that can finally bring the wanton destruction of a precious protected species to an end.
