Climate change to be at the heart of education by 2023

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust welcomes the Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi’s announcement at COP26 that aims to put climate change into the heart of education by 2023. Now we'd like to see those ideas put into action.

The Trust have been delivering environmental education for decades, supporting schools to develop their outdoor learning programmes, engaging children through nature connection and environmental education programmes on our reserves and training school staff to deliver engaging programmes on their own sites. We know first-hand how climate change, and nature can be at the heart of education.

Our Wilder School programme allows schools to actively take action to help tackle the nature and climate emergencies. By becoming a wilder school, they are signing up to make a pledge for nature. The programme has 4 pillars to help focus the school on their journey.

1. School grounds

Creating more space for nature to thrive and habitats that are the nature-based solutions to tackle climate change.

2. Sustainability credentials of the school

Reduced pressure on the environment and thinking about steps the school can make to save energy, energy alternatives like solar panels and saving water by installing water butts.

3. Outdoor learning: more pupils & staff connected to nature

One of the trust strategy objectives is to have 1 in 4 people connected to nature by 2030. If we have more people connected to nature then we stand a better chance for tackling climate change. Schools are encouraged to take lessons outside, to learn in nature, and from nature.

4. Fundraising

Support the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to continue our work to create more space for nature. Also fundraise for your school wilder projects to fund resources.
