Community Unites to Plant 756 Trees at Milton Locks Nature Reserve

Local community comes together to plant 756 trees and create a 63-meter-long fruiting hedge at Trust's Milton Locks Nature Reserve.

We are thrilled to announce the success of the recent tree planting event at Milton Locks Nature Reserve on Saturday 18 February - the event brought together over 50 volunteers from the Portsmouth and Southsea Tree Wardens, Friends of Langstone Harbour, and the local community.

Despite the chilly weather, the energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers was fantastic as they came together to plant an impressive 756 trees in a 63-meter-long fruiting hedge. The hedge, made up of 11 trees including Prunus Avium (Wild Cherry), Cretagus Monogyna (Hawthorn) and Hornbeam will provide nourishment and shelter for wildlife, and a beautiful legacy for the local community and generations to come.

"The turnout for the tree planting event was absolutely fantastic! It's so inspiring to see members of the community come together to take action. Wilder Portsmouth is proud to be a part of this collaborative effort, and we can't wait to see the positive impact these new trees will have on local wildlife." - Wilder Communities Project Officer, Andy Ames

It's community-led projects like this that are helping to create a Wilder Portsmouth! Wilder Portsmouth is a partnership project between the Southern Co-op and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The focus of this jointly funded initiative is to encourage people to take action to create and enhance wild spaces where they live. If you're doing something amazing within your community to help wildlife and wild places, we want to hear about it. Together, we can work towards a wilder future that benefits both people and wildlife. Find out more
