Save Every Drop

Here in Hampshire, we often take for granted something that is actually an incredible luxury: clean water brought directly into our homes. With this precious natural resource available at the turn of a tap it can be easy to overlook where it comes from, and to forget about leaving a share for nature.

Much of the county's water is drawn from a chalk aquifer deep below ground, in a process called 'abstraction'. But we aren't the only ones using this hidden store: our beautiful chalk streams also rely on it for a water supply, and their wonderful wildlife can suffer if there isn't enough to go around.

We're teaming up with Southern Water to tackle this issue through the Save Every Drop project, which is part of the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme. Abstraction is based on public demand - the more water we use, the more needs to be drawn from the aquifer. Can you help keep the flow going?

Local challenges

Each year, we bring local water saving challenges to different communities within our scheme area. If there isn't one currently active where you  live, you can still make a difference by trying out the water saving tips in the resources above.

Our local challenges for 2021 are focused on the River Arle (e.g. Alresford, Bishop's Sutton, Ropley Dean) and the Upper Test (e.g. Whitchurch, Laverstoke, Freefolk, Overton). You can check which stream catchment you fall into using the map below.

Home visits

If Southern Water provide your supply and waste services, you have a water meter, and you live in our current local challenge areas, you could be eligible for a home visit. An expert will drop by at your convenience to spot water-saving opportunities, including finding small leaks.

The visits, and any devices installed, are completely free. Even better, you'll be entered into our special prize draw to win £500 off your water bill (full terms and conditions below). Just be sure to reference Watercress and Winterbournes when you book!
