Recreational Activity Survey Volunteer
We’re looking for volunteers to support our Recreational Activity surveys this August and September. Ideally, you’ll be based on the Isle of Wight, but this opportunity is open to Hampshire volunteers too. It’s a great opportunity to spend a couple of hours by the sea while helping us collect valuable data that contributes to the protection of seagrass. Surveys will take place every weekend and on one weekday throughout the month, at Palmer's farm and Osbourne Bay. Full training will be provided so you’ll have everything you need to get started.
Times, days and frequency we'd like you to be available: Surveys will take place every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday in August and September. After signing up, a spreadsheet will be shared with you, where you can choose which dates you sign up to.
Purpose of volunteer role:
- This is a temporary volunteering role, where you'll support us by gathering essential data on recreational activity occurring in certain areas. This will include dog walkers and boat anchoring and presence in marine protected areas.
- The data collected will help us monitor essential seagrass habitats and contributes to the overall aims of the Solent Seascape Project.
Skills and abilities needed:
- No species skills required, but previous experience collecting survey data is a plus. However, we will fully train you for the volunteer role.
- An enthusiasm for our work and ability to continuously survey an area for 1-hour.
Specific considerations:
- This role will entail working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, but no extreme weather. The sites we survey are remote and walking to reach them. The ground can be unstable and liable to be slippery. It requires a level of fitness, balance and mobility to navigate safely. Please take this into consideration and ask our staff whether the survey would be suitable for you.
- Due to the location, you must have suitable clothing and footwear. And an ability to carry some equipment from your car to the survey site.
What's in it for you?
- Be part of the exciting innovate work that is being done by the Solent Seascape Project.
- A chance to get outside and enjoy our shores while contributing to the protection of our precious seagrass habitats through data collection.
- Learn new things and upgrade your surveying skills.
