Community grants open for Sustainable Drainage Systems in Portsmouth

Communities in Portsmouth can now apply for funding to create Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), helping manage rainwater more naturally while boosting wildlife and improving local spaces.

SuDS are practical features such as rain gardens, planted beds, water butts and permeable surfaces. These systems slow down and store rainwater where it falls, rather than allowing it to overwhelm drains and sewers.

By reducing surface water runoff, SuDS help lower flood risk and reduce pollution entering rivers and the sea. They also provide valuable habitat and food sources for urban wildlife, making neighbourhoods greener and more resilient.

About Nature Positive Portsmouth

The Community SuDS grant scheme forms part of the wider Nature Positive Portsmouth project – a partnership bringing together organisations across the city to support nature’s recovery and help Portsmouth become a greener, more climate-resilient place.

Working together, partners are helping communities take practical action for nature, from creating wildlife-friendly habitats to improving water management and building resilience to climate change. The project is supported by Portsmouth City Council through the Nature Towns and Cities Fund, with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust playing an active role.
