Marine Champion

We are looking for volunteers to support our marine conservation and engagement work. This could include assisting with intertidal surveys, helping us gather important data, and reaching out to local communities through events and workshops.

Locations all over Hampshire and the Isle of Wight

Times, days and frequency we'd like you to be available: No set times or days. You can sign up to events as and when you would like, focusing on the activities that interest you most.

Purpose of volunteer role:

  • This role involves participating and assisting with various citizen science activities such as intertidal surveys and boating surveys. You’ll help by gathering data to support conservation efforts, as well as learning hands on knowledge about the species and habitats you encounter.
  • There will also be opportunities to get involved in our engagement work. This might include reaching out to local communities through events, talks, workshops and social media, sharing fascinating facts and inspiring stories. Your main role is to champion our key messages to individuals and communities of the Solent to encourage positive behavioural change towards these habitats and alleviate pressure.

Skills and abilities needed:

  • No species skills required, but it would be helpful to have some marine ID knowledge, however full training will be provided to you.
  • No prior communication skills required to help with engagement events, apart from loving the Solent and being keen to talk to the public about our amazing local marine life.

Specific considerations:

  • Some of this role (surveying) will entail working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, but no extreme weather. The sites we survey are often remote and require walking to reach them. The ground is unstable, rocky and liable to be slippery. It requires a level of fitness, balance and mobility to navigate safely. Please take this into consideration and ask our staff whether the survey would be suitable for you.
  • If coming to events, this usually entails periods of time standing or sitting, indoors and outdoors and engaging with small or large groups of people.

What's in it for you?

  • Be part of the exciting innovate work that is being done by the Solent Seascape Project.
  • A chance to get outside and enjoy our shores while assisting in helping the marine environment.
  • Learn new things and upgrade your intertidal ID skills as well as an opportunity to pass on what you already know to others.
  • Opportunities to upskill through leadership training and gain opportunities to lead and organise your own events.
  • Improve your communication skills and confidence through practice at events and talks, with opportunities for upskilling through training courses.
