Wilder Champion
Wilder Champion
Location: Various, across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight
Purpose of role: To work with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to raise the profile of Team Wilder and encourage others in your local area to make a change for the benefit of wildlife and people.
Tasks involved in this role: This role will be shaped by you and depends on what skills and passions you bring to the table. Using your art, your craft, your knowledge, and your skills, you can directly or indirectly inspire people to take action for nature.
Activities may include (depending on skills and experience):
• Supporting Wildlife Trust staff and Team Wilder groups with the planning of events, family activities, walks and talks. You’ll be helping with organising and planning events from finding a venue and putting the entertainment together to advertising and writing social media comms. Champions will be invited to join regular steering group meetings to help shape the focus of an events programme to best compliment the work of the Trust and maximise engagement, action for nature and support for the Trust.
• Going to fairs and other community events to share information on Team Wilder and motivate people to join in, for example promoting free Wildlife Garden Consultations.
• If you’re particularly passionate about or experienced in a wildlife related subject or hobby (e.g. if you’re a biologist or a photographer etc), you can host walks and talks about that on behalf of the Wildlife Trust.
• Telling the stories of our Team Wilder members, community groups, and schools. You can write blogs and social media posts or create short films and other creative outlets to share these stories.
• Engaging with people on our Facebook group and writing social media posts.
• Writing resources for Team Wilder.
• Using your skills and personal networks to increase and diversify Team Wilder’s reach and engagement. Work with the Wildlife Trust on how we can develop Team Wilder in this way.
Skills and abilities needed: You do not need any special skills or knowledge to support events, but an enthusiasm for wildlife is essential and you enjoy talking to people. If you do have any specialist knowledge or skills that you think would be beneficial, please mention them when applying.
For communications support, you will need researching skills to look into the wilder stories you’ll be telling. If you’re writing, you’ll need good written communication skills which we’ll assess before signing you up. If you’re creating other media to tell our wilder stories, you’ll need to provide the Trust with an example of your skills and abilities (e.g. making videos). You will need a computer and appropriate software to complete many of these tasks.
An enhanced DBS check will be required for those supporting the delivery of family events.
What's in it for you?
• Our Wilder Champions will work closely with teams across the Trust, who will give you support, guidance and training.
• For those who wish to lead events, you will receive training.
• You will get to meet like-minded people and be invited to attend the annual Wilder Champion awards.
• It will be great fun!
