It's not "nature or development". It's both.
The UK Government promised to protect and restore nature. But a year in, new planning laws are set to weaken environmental protections and create a 'cash to trash' system.
This is bad for wildlife and for people.
We’re tired of hearing the blame for slow development being placed on wildlife when evidence shows this isn't true.
Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our campaigns to reduce the risks the Planning & Infrastructure Bill poses to nature.
Your voice makes a difference – we are making progress.
In response to huge pressure the Government amended the Bill to add some environmental safeguards in July. In October the Lords voted to add important protections for chalk streams (amendment 94) to the Bill. Crucially, the Lords also voted to back amendment 130, which would prevent Part 3 of the Bill applying in areas where it could hurt wildlife.
MPs will be voting in November on whether to accept the Lords amendments.
This is our last chance to improve the Bill for nature.
Contact your MP to ask that they stand up for wildlife when voting on the Lords amendments.
We need homes for people, but destroying homes for wildlife isn’t the way to do it.
A note on amendment numbering
On 10th November, both amendments returned to the Commons and were given new numbers for this stage. Lords amendment 130 on EDPs is now known in the Commons as amendment 40 and Lords amendment 94 on chalk streams is known in the Commons as amendment 38. To avoid confusion, The Wildlife Trusts will continue to principally refer to Lords amendments 130 and 94, with the Commons numbers added afterwards in brackets where possible.
