If you were asked to picture a British garden, what images would come to mind? Perfectly manicured lawns? Vibrant flowerbeds bursting with colour? Jane and Steve Page pose this very question in their garden talks, challenging the preconceived ideas many of us have about what a garden ‘should’ look like.
Instead, they present an alternative: a garden designed for nature. Their talk takes attendees on a journey of discovery, highlighting the beauty found in our often-overlooked native species and why they deserve our attention.
Beginning with the initial challenges faced in their garden, such as towering pine trees and large patches of shade, attendees learn how the garden evolved and the species that began to appear. From the benefits of extending ‘No Mow May’ into the summer, to creating a wildlife pond, the pair show that there are many ways to make space for wildlife while still enjoying a beautiful garden.
The talk also showcases the broad scale of biodiversity that gardens can support. From hydra to hedgehogs, Jane and Steve introduce audiences to some of the smallest life in their garden as well as the larger, more familiar visitors. Through striking imagery and immersive soundscapes, they help audiences connect with the discoveries made over time.
Steve said: "My inspiration came from seeing the abundance of wildlife around the wildflowers in the Trusts nature reserves and I thought we ought to be able to bring more of that to our own garden - and see it close up every day. The results have been much better than expected and we’ve learnt so much more about our native wildlife and are discovering more nearly every day! It’s great to meet and share and help others who are passionate about the same things - and it’s fun!"
Jane also shared her thoughts: "We enjoy getting closer to nature and discovering more about the natural world through gardening this way - and enjoy sharing our experiences with others at our talks and our visitor days. And if we can inspire others to make one or two small changes to benefit wildlife - it’s worth it. Plus raising funds for the Wildlife Trust at the same time is a bonus - it’s a win all round!"
Not only are Jane and Steve Page passionate about engaging local communities, but they are also dedicated supporters of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. As well as volunteering with Team Wilder as Garden Champions, the pair have generously raised funds to help support the Trust’s Wilder Gardening initiatives, inspiring others to welcome wildlife into their own gardens.
