Blashford boardwalk & pond appeal update

Last year we successfully raised the money needed to renew and replace the boardwalk and old dipping pond at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve. Our volunteers and staff have been working incredibly hard on the major project.

With thanks to the generosity of all of those who donated to our public appeal last year we have been making good progress on the boardwalk repairs. To date we have:

  • Carried out tree works to clear the boardwalk route and to address some dangerous trees that were in falling distance of the structure.
  • The dry weather over summer played to our advantage meaning we could carry out the work without being up to our knees in mud. Water levels have shot back up in the last fortnight so the remaining sections will require us to don our waders!
  • The wider section of the boardwalk will be a ‘passing place’ for mobility scooters and could also be used by smaller groups as a stopping off point by people on guided walks, talks or education sessions.

There is still more work to be done and costs have increased significantly over the past year. We have also had some staff changes at Blashford Lakes, so the works haven’t yet been completed. We are making good progress though, and we're looking forward to continuing the work to get this huge project finished!
