The Trust periodically offers work experience and voluntary placement opportunities across Hampshire & Isle of Wight for people looking to make a career move into the environment or conservation sector. Opportunities can vary from short placements up to 12 months. If you are under 18 regrettably there are limitations on the opportunities that we can offer, but please email us to find out more.
We have no work placement opportunities at present. Please do take a look at our other volunteering opportunities from practical conservation, to education and office support.
Work Experience Testimonials
Suzanne Jenkins, Trainee Ecologist, 6 months voluntary placement
"I have a BSc. (Hons.) in Ecology and Conservation and an MSc. In Taxonomy and Biodiversity. I’ve worked in curation of scientific plant collections in London and Australia where I also worked as a field botanist. Deciding I wanted to work as an ecologist I undertook a range of volunteering roles and was successful when I applied for a Trainee ecologist with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The placement had a wetlands focus and we spent a lot of the survey season monitoring Southern damselfly and white-clawed crayfish, I also carried out a variety of different species and habitat surveys including bat surveys, small mammal surveys and great-crested newt surveys. A real highlight for me was assisting with the release of captive bred water voles on the Meon. This placement has been really useful for me. It has been great to gain some real insight into the day-to-day work of an ecologist and all that it entails. I will definitely use a lot of what I have learnt in the future."
