Species groups

Help our local species

Our species groups work to promote the conservation of all threatened species in Hampshire and on the Island, as well as establishing and monitoring their distribution.

Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Recording Network (HARRN)

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is home to 12 out of 13 of the UK’s native amphibians and reptiles.

Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Recording Network (HARRN) is coordinated by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. HARRN aims to record, monitor and survey Biodiversity Action Plan species to ensure they are conserved and protected. Submitting records is vital to this work, and you can find more about how to submit your sightings below.

Submitting Records

The county recorder for amphibian and reptile records can be contacted on HARRN.Recorder@hiwwt.org.uk

Hampshire & IOW Amphibian & Reptile Atlas

We are gathering vital information about amphibian and reptile species, where they live, and where they visit. In particular we are keen to fill in the gaps in the data already held:

The first map above shows all the 1km squares where there is at least one amphibian or reptile record. The second highlights under-recorded areas at a 10km scale.

The Atlas Team is Tim Bernhard, John Buckley, Paul Edgar, Nick Smith and Aggie Thompson.

Herpetofauna Report

A report, based on all the records submitted to HARRN between 2006 and 2016. The report shows the distribution of amphibians and reptiles in Hampshire and contains summary information about each species. The report, is also available to download here

The previous report, covering the period 2002 and 2012 is also available to download here.

Hampshire Flora Group (HFG)

The Flora Group exists to encourage people to take an interest in wild plants and to expand their knowledge; it is concerned not only with flowering plants and ferns, but also lichens, mosses, liverworts and fungi (which are not plants at all!)

Objectives of Hampshire Flora Group

  • To promote the conservation of flora in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
  • To establish and monitor the status of flora in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
  • To foster an interest in the conservation of flora in Hampshire and to develop the skills of those interested in plants

Hampshire Flora Group is coordinated by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. We work with the Botanical Society of the British Isles and their local forum at Hants Plants, we also work closely with Plantlife and Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre.

How to Join

Everyone with an interest in plants is very welcome to join the Flora Group and get involved in surveys, events and meet other flora enthusiasts. The Group is keen to welcome people of all abilities and coming along to an event is a great way to get started.

Hampshire Flora Group events

Events can be found here or within the Hampshire Flora Group Newsletter which details all the Group’s activities and events. Download your copy here.

A back catalogue and index to previous copies of Flora News are available to download from the Hants Plants website.

Hampshire Rare Plant Register – Order your copy now of the Hampshire Rare Plant Register, a detailed register of rare and scare plants in the county, has recently been published. Follow this link for details on how to obtain your copy.

Hampshire Mammal Group (HMG)

Hampshire Mammal Group is coordinated by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and is affiliated to The Mammal Society.

Main objectives:

  • To promote the conservation of all threatened mammals and their habitats in Hampshire.
  • To establish and monitor their distribution.
  • To provide advice on threatened mammals and the management of their habitats.
  • To foster an interest in the conservation of all native mammals.

Reports

Download your copy of our 2017 Hampshire Mammal Report, which shows the distribution records for every mammal species found in Hampshire from 2006 to 2016. The report is a very useful on-going record of both the distribution of species found in Hampshire and the impressive degree of commitment of those Mammal Group members who have contributed these records. A list of these can be found at the end of the report and our thanks go out to all of them.

Hampshire Mammal Group members’ records also contributed to the production of the South East Mammal Atlas which was completed by The Mammal Society in March 2015. It is available online here.

Camera Trap Loans

As a member of the Hampshire Mammal Group you would also be eligible to borrow one of two Bushnell camera traps. The Hampshire Mammal Group received funding through the Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre (HBIC) small grants scheme for these cameras, which help to collect mammal records for species that might have otherwise not be seen.

How to Join

Everyone with an interest in mammals is very welcome to join the Hampshire Mammal Group today and get involved in surveys, come along to group events and meet other mammal enthusiasts. Details on how to join a species group can be found here.

More about our species groups

HFG and HMG are run by a volunteer committee of dedicated individuals with extensive ecological expertise and knowledge.

The two groups hold walks, talks and events throughout the year and produce newsletters, which are distributed to members. HFG, HMG and HARRN promote recording and encourage their members to send in records of the species they see in and around Hampshire and the Island.

Our species groups also form part of a Hampshire-wide recording network for all species and work closely with Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre (HBIC). HBIC and the Wildlife Trust moderate an e-group forum for local recorders to discuss recording activities, share knowledge and learn about recording events.
