Winnall Moors

It is easy to forget in this tranquil spot that the bustling city centre is a short walk away. Winnall Moors has the renowned and beautiful River Itchen flowing throughout its length, providing much needed water for the wet grasslands, reedbeds, wet woodlands and ponds.

Spanning approximately 158 acres of floodplain the reserve offers a glance at the full range of habitats that once would have been present along the whole river valley.

A recent video of an otter on the Reserve, filmed by Alex Hogg.

Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund a 5 year programme of improvement work commenced in autumn 2008. This involves:

  • Returning some water channels to a more natural flow pattern to benefit brown trout, otter and water vole
  • Repairing sluices and hatches to raise ground water levels to benefit waders such as lapwing, snipe, and redshank
  • Removing some trees to recreate the open landscape that the moors had in the past
  • Improving public access and information panels around parts of the site

Why not combine your visit with a stop at the National Trust's City Mill? Here you can watch footage of otters passing though the mill (Admission to the Mill is free to Wildlife Trust members). download the Winnall leaflet, explaining how to get there from the National Trust's City Mill (large file).
