Mapping the Solent

The Solent is a rich and lively stretch of water, home to many diverse wildlife habitats and species. Seagrass meadows, chalk reefs and rocky sponge gardens are home to seahorses and sea bass, seals, colourful anemones, sea squirts and cuttlefish.

Although the Solent is enjoyed by millions of people every year, very few realise the wealth of marine life concealed beneath the waves.

We've teamed up with local artist Hannah Horn, as part of our project Secrets of the Solent, to highlight the interconnectedness of the Solent's natural marine environment, its cultural and social significance, and its current and historic use as an important hub for business, trade, and recreation.

Working directly with local communities, Hannah will design and paint a gigantic map of the Solent divided into six individual jigsaw piece-shaped murals. Participants of our interactive art workshops were able to contribute their own sketches and ideas to be incorporated in the final designs.

Meet the Artist

Hannah Horn is an artist and illustrator based in Southsea, Hampshire.
Her work draws inspiration from the natural world while invoking surreal and often fantastical elements. With an eye for composition, she utilises a combination of vibrant paint and highly detailed pen and ink line work, blending to create elegant and beautiful images. Initially studying fashion illustration at the London College of Fashion, Hannah has gone on to create artwork for award-winning children’s books, advertising agencies, fashion houses and more.

Ever since I began drawing animals, I've been working out how to emulate not just their complex beauty, but their personalities too."

I have always been fascinated by nature. Ever since I began drawing animals, I've been working out how to emulate not just their complex beauty, but their personalities too. I love the challenge of capturing their unique movements and placing them in the secret world of their habitats.

Through the Secrets of the Solent, I've personally learnt so much about the hidden and sadly threatened native wildlife in Hampshire. I really hope the project can raise awareness and inspire others into helping conserve the beautiful waters and landscapes we share with our marine friends.
