Roaming by the River

Of all the boons our chalk streams offer us, the simplest is the chance to be close to nature. Walking by their crystal waters, we get a glimpse into a whole new world - we hear calling birds and bubbling currents, see darting fish and dancing mayflies, and catch the wafting scent of streamside flowers in bloom. Moments of discovery, inspiration, and appreciation are everywhere.

The benefits of such experiences are well-documented: studies have shown that being near rivers is good for our wellbeing, even when they flow through urban spaces. But the streams, and the joys they contain, aren't always accessible to everyone. Boggy ground, thick undergrowth, and barrier structures can form a small obstacle course, especially for those with limited mobility.

Roaming by the River is a project focused on improving access to these precious habitats, as part of the Watercress and Winterbournes scheme. We're bringing chalk streams wonders within reach by replacing stiles with kissing gates, repairing or building footpaths, and adding seats where you can enjoy the view.

What's more, the sediment this released was slowly damaging the adjacent chalk stream. We were able to make repairs that will reduce future erosion, improving public access while also boosting the health of the stream.

Millennium Green Pond

By adding a wheelchair-accessible path, bench, and viewing platform, we helped make this peaceful spot easier for the village communities to enjoy.
