Within job level B: £18,000 - £23,000 pa, depending on qualifications and experience; full time 35 hours per week; Temporary seasonal (10th September 2018 until 31st March 2019) contract; based near Yarmouth, Isle of Wight
The Solent Recreation Mitigation Project is a partnership of fifteen Solent Local authorities, the RSPB, the Chichester Harbour Conservancy, Natural England and the Wildlife Trust. The partnership seeks to minimise the disturbance caused by human activity on the overwintering wildfowl and wader populations on the Solent and Southampton Water Special Protection Area through its Bird Aware Solent Ranger Team.
This is a great opportunity for an excellent communicator and highly motivated individual to join Bird Aware Solent, a new and exciting project working to protect the Solent coast’s bird life. This role is based on the Isle of Wight with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.
Working across the Solent coastline you will be working as part of a ranger team, providing an on-the-ground ranger service in the Solent’s three Special Protection Areas (SPAs). This position focuses on community engagement; you will be engaging directly with the public to raise awareness amongst visitors of the sensitivity of this internationally important wintering site for migratory birds. You will work closely with landowners, managers and other key partners (including local authorities, the Wildlife Trust, the RSPB, the National Trust, the New Forest National Park Authority, Chichester Harbour Conservancy and Natural England). The post holder will undertake patrols of Isle of Wight Solent coastal sites, talking to the public about bird disturbance issues and reporting incidents and activity to a central database co-ordinated by the lead project officer based in Hampshire. Patrols will need to be undertaken at peak times for disturbance events but also be co-ordinated with the tides so weekend work will be required.
A strong team player who is able to work on their own is sought. The successful candidate will be used to working in a physically active environment, will have experience of education or public engagement and have knowledge of ecological principles and relevant protected species. Experience of uploading onto social media such as Facebook and Twitter is desirable. A full driving licence is essential.
